VC10 TT Club Championship Round 5

by greg on Jun.24, 2010, under Latest VC10 News

Dave Johnson winning by a very narrow margin

All change at the top of the league table tonight. Nick Calkin deciding to rest after his efforts in the 24 hour Mountain Mayhem MTB race. Discards are yet to be applied so Nick drops off top spot for now.

Again we were lucky enough to ride in near perfect conditions. Light winds and warm weather allowed  Terry Hammond and recently turned 15 years old Will Dixon to dig deep and produce personel bests.

Aspire Holistic Coach Dave Johnson showed his training advice really works by dead heating in form Pete Lawrence with an identical time of 22.17. Apart from sharing 1st place, Pete also has something in common with Dave. Pete is coached by Dave Johnson. Checking the stopwatch showed there was only a 1/10 second in the time. If we had been timing to less than a second Dave would have taken top spot.

Ed Clemens took the prize for 1st place in the Juniors with Simon Baker riding for the first time in a VC10 TT.

Next week is a 25 at Great Missenden.

VC10 – the Midsummer Massive!

by greg on Jun.22, 2010, under Latest VC10 News, News & Features

British Heart Foundation London to Brighton

Rich King writes:

“Here is a quick synopsis of the London to Brighton ride on Sunday. I left bang on 06:15 from Clapham Common with hundreds of other riders already in front of me, headed out through South West London and when going through Sutton I heard someone shout “VC10″ it was Simon Oxenham and Bob Hobson they were going considerably quicker than I so will be interesting to hear how they did?

All in all for me it was a consistent ride where the training rides through the Chilterns helped me massively to remain consistent. After the first hour my average speed was circa 22kmh but was predominantly dictated by the traffic of buses, traffic lights and high volume of cyclists. For the remainder of the ride I was able to keep my average speed over 27.5kmh which I was, and am, happy with considering all of the climbing that was involved – Ditchling Beacon being the most infamous on the route.

The most interesting sight was a tridem – (Just like the Goodies’ mode of transport) and the one that made me chuckle most was this: A husband desperate to avert a divorce placed large banners along the London to Brighton Bike Ride route to express his love for his wife.”

IT engineer Paul, 36, said he hoped the four 12ft by 3ft signs would “melt the heart” of his wife of four years, Zoe, and convince her of his love.

But after reaching the finish line on Brighton seafront, he failed to gain the warm response he was hoping for and tonight they headed home separately. After she crossed the finish line, he said: ‘It hasn’t gone according to plan. I didn’t even get a peck on the cheek.

‘We had a small bit of chit-chat. She said she wants to talk about it, but I don’t hold out much hope.’

Rich completes his report like this: “Oh and I owe it all to the Aspire Holistic mentoring!! “

Mountain Mayhem

Nick Calkin reports:

“The VC10 team of Iwona Szmyd, Nick Calkin, Kev Holloway and last minute guest Nathan Blake had a fantastic weekend riding the 9 mile hilly and technical Eastnor Castle course, at this year’s Mountain Mayhem.

Entered in the tough “Mixed Expert” category the team was challenged with riding as many laps as possible in 24 hours starting at 1400 on Saturday.

Ironman Triathlete Nathan started the team off on the first lap, which involves a half mile Le Mans style run which separates out the mass of 800 riders. Nathan had a good start mounting his bike in around 70th place.

Nathan’s first lap of 57 mins, including the run, set the pace for the day. Iwona was next to take the baton and turned in a very respectable 56 minutes followed by Nick with a 54. Famed climber Kev was next out and despite crashing on a steep technical descent when a rider bottled out in front of him, he returned grazed and bruised in a team best time of 52 mins.

Nathan showed his true form in his second round coming in with a 53 minute ride and then a ditching by Kev resulted in a bent rear mech hanger, but this was soon replaced with a new one, proving the importance of proper race preparation.

As dusk and the damp, chilly air approached, the team decided to put in 2 laps each which allows a longer rest period between rides. Iwona and Nick ended up doing their 2 laps completely in the dark with Nathan and Kev facing dusk and dawn respectively.

Back to single laps for Sunday with the riders maintaining good times despite the lack of sleep, fatigue and dehydration.

Nathan’s last lap started at1300 which meant another lap could be squeezed in if he came in before the1400 deadline. A quick check of the scores found that an extra lap wouldn’t change the final standings so Nathan eased up a little and the team finished with 25 laps in 24:00:40.

This left us in 4th place in category behind two manufacturers top pro teams, 1st, Team Scott, 2nd, Team Hope and a team from the RAF in 3rd.

Reading Track League

Kev Holloway sends this despatch about his son, Joe:

“I have at last got some news for you regarding Reading track league results… not mine, but Joe’s!

First race was a 10 lap A and B Scratch race. A very fast race and with 3 laps remaining the race was split into several groups of which Joe and I were in the lead one, Joe ended up crossing the line in 5th place overall and 1st B cat, I ended up 7th and 2nd B cat

Next came the Kierin heats where I got knocked out but Joe reached the final, where he did a fantastic ride; coming into the home straight he was in third place, concentrating on his form and  pedalling powered through to take the win by half a bike length!

The points race followed- a 12 lap race with points for the first 4 across the line every 3 laps. Joe won two of the sprints, but won’t know his position until the results are posted

Finally the 20K scratch race where Joe had to dig deep to come home 2nd B cat”

Belgian Stage racing

Rob Fletcher weekended in Belgium, riding a 3-day race.  He managed an excellent 13th place against hardman opposition. More details to follow.

High Wycombe’s Evening League

This week the riders were put round the fearsome and feared Whiteleaf circuit. James Turton showed excellent climbing and technical skills to finish 3rd in 39.28. Ralph Dadswell finished in 44.05, completing the two timed climbs very high up the rankings, and Stew King hauled his big, sprinter’s frame around in an excellent 44.44.

Bicester Millennium Airfield 10

Greg Lewis, coming back from a cold, tested his form on the windy Weston on the Green Airfield, posting 23.30, and coughing and spluttering all the way home again.

Amersham RC 10

Another windy morning saw Alan Simmonds take on the Great Missenden Bypass course and returned to the timekeeper in 25.00. Mark Wakely was close behind with 25.40. “ You didn’t miss much”, he told me later.

21st Century

Pete Lawrence at speed

Well Century 10 actually. Pete Lawrence headed over to Hertford again to ride the F20/10. This time on a Saturday evening. Hertford is a happy hunting ground for Pete. Having recently consolidated his 10mile TT time in the mid 21’s on this fast but exposed course. With a strong tailwind on the outbound leg Pete feared three PB’s in ten days was not going to be possible.

On returning to the HQ the scoreboard showed Pete had shaved more time off his recent 10 PB with a 21.12. Also showing good form in the cold and blustery conditions was Anna Holder, who showed perfect symmetry on the F20/10 course with a 24.24. Only 19 seconds off Anna’s best which had been set on a still and warm evening.

Still suffering with a dip in form caused by a head cold Greg Lewis could only manage a 22.44. Over 75 seconds off his best time on this course in late April.

Next Saturday is the Hertford Wheelers 10 on the same course. The weather forecast is looking excellent. A large VC10 contingent is heading over to this drag strip on the A10. Keep your eyes peeled for next weeks press report.

VC10 Press Report 14th June

by greg on Jun.18, 2010, under Latest VC10 News, News & Features

Personal best!

Almost monotonously, VC10 riders have leapt forward again to record lifetime best performances, season’s bests and other “head-of-the-field” performances

HWCC Evening League 25

French Alpine espoir, Richard Wise, showed strength to produce 1.13.25, pipping Richard King, 1.15.12, just outside the 20mph marker. Ralph Dadswell hopped onto 3 wheels to produce a fast 1.3.44, and Joe Holloway posted 1.2.49.

Joe Holloway "Man on Fire"

Joe Holloway "Man on Fire"

Hertford Wheelers 10

Pete Lawrence produced his first Pb of the week on the same night, travelling to the A10 near Hoddesden to blast round the coveted course in a sparkling 21.21

Dursley 25

Pete led a trio including Chris Grieg and Richie Davies on the fast U46 near Cirencester. On a less than perfect evening, all three impressed, with Richie producing his second fastest ever ride – 58.10, Tall Chris beating his previous best ever, in  57.25 and Pete Pbing again – for the second time in the week, with a scorching 54.56.

Unfortunately, in an awful moment, these performances were overshadowed. All our riders were unaware of the tragedy unfolding in their midst, as a motorist ploughed into the back of Alex Anderson during his ride. Alex, so very sadly, did not make it. Our thoughts are with his family and friends

Off Road

On a very much happier note, Rick Fetherstone is still the off-road man to beat. In the Summit MTB series, he won the veteran’s section on both 26 May and 9 June and was 11th in the Southern Xc series race 3 at Crow Hill.

Blenheim Tri

Father and son team Dan and Ed Clemens tried a dabble in the lake at Blenheim Palace north of Oxford, taking part in the triathlons held there. Ed leapt into the Under-17’s Super Sprint, clocking 6.28 for the 400m lake swim (like trying to swim in a washing machine!), 23.08 for the 13.8km bike leg, and 12.48 in the 2.9k foot race. Overall, Ed was 23rd in 47.11

Dad Dan went further, though a little slower. 750m in the cold water took 17.16, The 20k bike lasted 36.09 and he finished with a 5k run in 28.25. 1.28.25 for 841st. BIG field!!!

Tour de Vale

With many other riders, Dan and Ed also took part in the Tour de Vale in Aylesbury on Sunday. Ed’s competitive spirit propelled him out of the gate first, and he was seen closely following the lead car as he hurtled past Stoke Mandeville National Spinal Injuries Centre. First away, he maintained his advantage for the full 55 miles, to return to the finish first, too. More details next week.

VC10 Club TT Championship Round 4

by greg on Jun.17, 2010, under Latest VC10 News

So far the 2010 VC10 TT Championship has been blessed with beautiful summers evenings. Round 4 of the VC10 club championship took place on a revised version of the Great Missenden Course. We used the HCC180 course but in reverse. Starting at the Aylesbury end of the A413.

Terry Hammond rode his first ever time trial and managed to beat the 30 minute mark which is a great achievement for a first ever 10 mile TT.

New Sub21 member Will Dixon. Who turned 15 on Monday blitz the revised course with a pb for a 10 of 25.42.  Other Sub21 riders were also showing great form. Ed Clemens and Joe Holloway both placing high in the overall standings and only being 20 seconds apart. The VC10 junior Tour of Wales team is looking stronger each week.

At the other end of the age spectrum 52 year pensioner Dave Johnson won the round with a time of 22.31. Dave comment “he  felt tired before the event an after the ride, but felt strong during the ride” Just shows you what years of experience can do for you.

The championship leader is now Nick Calkin with trike rider Ralph Dadswell only 5 points behind. With two discards to be applied there could well be a reshuffling of the order. Who knows until the season unfolds.
